CHAPTER 3: September 15, 1976; The Incident Part 2
It was 12:20 AM on Sunday, September 15, 1976.  Only 12 hours away from karate testing and there I was driving back into Creve Coeur Park.

This time I drove all the way down by the falls.  I parked sort of catty corner to the falls, killed my lights and turned off the engine.  Dennis and I both cracked our windows an inch o so and sat quietly, waiting for any noise or sound of approach.

Moments went by.  More moments went by.  Dennis and I both shifted in our seats.

Another moment.  "Dennis ..." I started in a whisper.  "Shhhh!" Dennis issued, looking out his window.

"What are you ..." I started, annoyed.  "Shhhh!" he gestured this time with his hand for me to shut up.

"what?" I quietly asked.  Dennis was focused.  He carefully and cautiously pointed in a direction towards the falls.

"There's somethin' over there.  By the path off from the falls." he whispered.

I looked but was unable to penetrate the blackness of our surroundings.  "Can't see anything." I said.

Dennis' was locked on target as his head and pointing finger from his left arm drawn across his chest slowly moved along.  "Whatever it is, it's moving along the tree line." he whispered.

Whatever "it" is?  "What do you see?" I asked.

"It looks like a person.  Walking.  Moving a bit, stopping, moving some more.  It's stopped over by those trees."

"What trees?"

"Those trees."

"I can't see anything."

Dennis finally looked back at me in frustration and gestured hard with his finger.

"Right over there!" he whispered loudly.  He looked back and grunted a sigh as he lowered his head to rub his eyes with his right hand.

I leaned over slight to use his pointer as an aim on a rifle.  In the blink of an eye, I saw something huge ... massive body, swinging limbs, no neck and large conical shaped head, all with what appeared to be a harsh hairy outline to it.   The motion would be best described as lumbering between two trees against the partially moonlit and very overcast midnight sky.

My mind raced.  I was at an angle looking upward.  Couldn't have been a bear, no person that massive, not ... no ... and never mind that I'm about to test for green belt and Dennis was Golden Gloves.  I reached for the car keys and fired up the engine.

Dennis snapped to and asked me to wait.  "We need to get a better look."

Something inside me wanted to get a better look and yet my self defense training was screaming for me to get the hell out of there.  My human nature desiring adventure rationalized.  We're in a car.  All I have to do is drop it in gear and go.  Whatever it is won't be able to keep up with the car.

"Okay." I finally said.  Dennis looked back out the window and found the target.

"It's standing right over there.  It's ... like ... it's swaying a little back and forth ... like it's looking at us." Dennis observed.

"It's looking at us?  At my car?" I said.  Then I thought "If something that big is looking at my car, I want to see where it's at."  Without a word to Dennis, I reached up and pulled the headlights on.

The lights came on, reflecting off the part of the falls that had accumulated some early morning dew and suddenly the whole area glowed.

"OH MY GOD, GO, JOE GO!!!!!!!!!!!" screamed Dennis as he frantically moved all around in his seat, his seatbelt keeping him in one place and making him feel trapped in dangers way.

That was my cue.  I nodded as I shifted into drive and floored the accelerator.

The station wagon lurched forward swinging hard to the left to complete the gravel circular drive and spew rocks behind us.

As I drove, Dennis finally loosens his seatbelt and the wagon started to fishtail and began sending me into the tree line to the right.  I had to stop to gain control.  As I throw it in reverse, Dennis is watching through the back and still screaming for me to get us the f--- out of there.

We hit Marine Ave. and headed east up the winding road.

Keeping my bearings, I maintained a watch to our right hoping whatever it was didn't cut through the woods to meet us on the road.  We reached Dorsett Road.  I pumped the brakes briefly and then tore left down Dorsett.  All light at this time were blinking yellow and I took us all the way to the Steak 'N Shake at McKelvey and swung into the parking lot, grabbing the first parking space I could maneuver into safely.

I turned the engine off and we sat there in silence.   I looked back at the restaurant, noticed the patrons inside going about there midnight dining experience, then a police cruiser parked close to the building, then I looked back to the road.  My breathing began slowing down to normal.  That was the operative word.  Everything was normal again.

I finally asked Dennis what had happened.  He told me that when the headlights came on, whatever it was raised up to full height and started moving towards the car.  It was so fast it was almost on us when I hit the gas.

The truth of the matter was that nothing was normal again.  My life had been changed forever.
